Does the title of this article sound strange? You may think that one could work and promote any business niche. Do a little research and you’ve got it. This is true with the exception that if the niche is not heart felt or something you are passionate about, your clients will feel the disorientation and will not be as confident with you and your product or services as you want them to be.

This author believes it is helpful for whatever business you may have, that your niche or what you are promoting be compatible with what you are passionate about, what you believe in, what you think about down deep in your soul in other words your mission in life. When your actions are not synchronized with your inner purpose you begin to feel discontent, perhaps nervous, or you just don’t feel right. Something is out of place. On the other hand when there is a clear sense of purpose, life and all life details fall into place smoothly.

In a home based business, the owner typically is the business. If your business mission and sense of purpose are in synch, prospects and clients feel the concentrated energy projected. They feel the confidence you radiate and in turn will themselves feel confident in their dealings with you. This inner power that you generate, through an increased sense of confidence helps propel your business. People with missions find ways to their goals. They will not be denied.

That is why it is absolutely necessary to find a niche that calls out to you. A subject that you will learn and teach about with confidence. The more you know about your subject, the more people will look to you as an authority. You will be the master of the subject. Knowledge builds confidence. Niches are often based on your area of expertise. If your area of expertise is also the work you love to do, you’ve probably spent a lot of time and money in educating yourself and in perfecting your skills. Building a business around a subject you’ve mastered gives you more confidence when taking your message to the marketplace. A business on which you don’t feel any link to your mission does not have the same impact, because it is not where your strengths lie.

Knowledge about your business or subject makes you credible to prospects. People are more likely to trust the work of a qualified expert on the subject than someone who has a general idea of the subject. Prospects looking to purchase a product or service don’t want mediocre information about that product or service. They want the real thing. They have the money to pay and want the best.

Mastering a specific subject gives your business depth and focus. A niche helps you become known quickly. If you direct your marketing efforts repeatedly to the same group of people, you will become known more quickly. If you communicate a clear business focus to this same group of people, you will become known more quickly. You will become known as an expert in your field and that is precisely what you want. When someone in this group requires your service or product, they will think of you. This is why it is so absolutely critical to be the expert people turn to.

Targeting the same group of people for your marketing cuts down your costs. You no longer have to worry about advertising to the whole world. Just your group. Tailoring your marketing to people who already have a need for your product or service means you won’t waste money on prospects that do not have an interest. Your cost per lead is reduced.

All of these positive points head right to the big one. Enjoying your work. A niche makes your work more enjoyable. If you focus on work you love to do for people you enjoy serving, your work seems like play. The research phase of any info product development is the most important part of the whole development process. If you do not do your research then you have no idea whether there is a market for your product.

Once you get to know the marketplace you may well be able to know by intuition what products that marketplace wants, but you will still research the market to ensure the demand is there.

The first step is to pick an idea you want to work with.
You may see something on the news, read something in a newspaper or hear people talking. You may see something in a shop – stores often have special promotions of popular and up and coming products. These may give you some good ideas
You can also look for niche forums and find posts talking about the problems people are facing. If the same subject is regularly repeated then you know it is a problem that a lot of people are facing.

Once you have an idea for a product you need to ensure there is a demand for it.
Go to Google and type in some keywords relating to the product idea. Go through the organic search engine results and look for other information products. If there are, then you know there is some demand for products in that niche.
Look at the Adwords results as well. Are people advertising information products through Adwords? If they are then that is a giveaway that there is money to be made in that niche. Advertisers won’t be paying for advertising unless they are getting a return on their investment.
There are niches out there which have demand but the people who populate the niche either don’t have any money or aren’t willing to spend any money. You can find that some niches just don’t have any demand for products.
It is vital that you do your due diligence when you are thinking about creating information products. If you don’t then you could end up wasting money. If you spend good money and / or time creating an information product to find there is no demand you have wasted your time and money.
Too many marketers skip this step, thinking they know the market and are then very disappointed when they realise they are not making sales.
