Before You Redesign Your Web Site

It’s a familiar story. Your Web site was designed around the time when an upstart named Google was just getting their foot in the door of the Search Engine market. At the time, it was a great Web site. It might have even had some cool new features like some JavaScript rollovers or maybe even some Flash.

Unfortunately, times change. Those image rollovers that you used to think were innovative are now horribly outdated and your competition seems to have redesigned their Web site about every 6 months since yours went live several years ago. It’s time to redesign.

It sounds like such a great project that it couldn’t possibly go wrong, but trust me—the best of intentions can sometimes lead to costly business mistakes. The entire redesign process would take several of these articles to properly explain, but I’d like to talk about my 4 basic rules to remember BEFORE you start the process of a Web site redesign:

1. Determine EXACTLY what you want from your new Web site and be realistic.
A Web site redesign project can be as big or small as you want it to be. Some times the written content might be fine and a freshening of the interface is all that’s in order. Other times some Web applications might need to be developed to take online orders or allow members to log in.

No matter what you decide you need, remember that everything that you do needs to accomplish your businesses’ overall goals of increasing sales and retaining current customers. Anything outside of this might not be necessary.

Also, don’t be afraid to do things in phases. A lot of my Web design clients do things this way because it allows them to focus on immediate needs first. For instance, a client might have very poor Search Engine rankings because their old Web site was poorly developed and their tags are no good. But they also want user forums where their clients can discuss and ask questions. We might do 2 phases for a project like this. The first would get their Web site up to date with the latest Search Engine Optimization techniques, and once that is done and the Search Engines are re-indexing their pages, we will develop the other features that they want on their site, such as the member forums.

2. Choose a Designer wisely.
Choosing the right Web designer is obviously a huge part of your Web site redesign project. Even large corporations with a creative department will outsource this job to an outside firm a lot of the time. The right Web designer will display creativity, but will also be sensitive to the context in which their designs are going to be viewed.

For instance, for a high-priced law firm in Manhattan, a singing, dancing animated character, executed in Flash, would not be the right way to go. Make sure that the Web designer has made work that fits the client’s personality and vision, and not the other way around.

A lot of clients that come to my firm inquiring about a Web redesign want to see only work that is in THEIR industry. I think that finding a designer that ‘knows’ your industry is a valid one, though a GOOD designer will put the time and effort to learn an industry. To me, it’s more important that someone has the sensitivity and understanding to be able to work with ANY industry. Some times firms that specialize in only one industry begin to suffer from ‘tunnel vision’ or possibly even lose their creativity altogether because they are no longer challenged with learning new things.

Either way, taking an extensive look at a Web Designer’s portfolio will tell you a lot. And you might want to call a few references as well.

3. Don’t give in to fads and eye candy.
As a Web Designer, it is my job to keep up with the latest and greatest software, plugins, trends and design ideas. While some of these are great tools, with every project that I tackle, I need to ask myself: “Does this tool—as cool as it looks—accomplish what the client wants to accomplish?” A lot of times it does, some times it doesn’t. For instance, I am a proponent of Flash because of the amount of interactivity and interest that it can add to a static Web page. But it only works when it is used properly and when it fits with the rest of the Web site. There are some times when animation, sound or video will just NOT work.

4. Remember why you’re doing it in the first place.
You are redesigning your Web site because your company wants to increase sales and retain current customers. If every single feature of your new Web site does not contribute to that, you need to reconsider why you are doing it. It’s not enough to just have a facelift every once in a while. A good Web site redesign can be costly and unless it is directly contributing to the growth of your company, you could easily put your marketing budget to better use.

The best Web site redesigns are the ones that take a company’s ideas and vision and portray it in a way that is attractive, easy to use and memorable. The features you add to your Web site that truly benefit your potential clients and current customers are the ones that will pay off tenfold in the long run.

Best of luck in your Web site redesign process.

Make Your Site Quick To Load!

The time it takes to load your site can make or break a visitor’s first impression of your site. If your site takes too long to load, the visitor will click “Stop” or “Back” and leave your web site. If you are a business and offering people important information, it is critical to have a nice design, with a quick load time.

You may want to check out the load time of your page, to indeed see if your site loads quick enough for the average user. A great site tool can be found at http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/ where you are able to enter your site and it displays a report on the time it takes to load your site on different connections, in addition to tips to decrease load time.

Upon doing a speed test, if your first page takes a great time to load in the visitor’s browser, it is in the best interest to do some redesigning to decrease load time and increase the number of visitors that will not click back on the browser. We must remember that not everyone is running on DSL or Cable modem. Many users still dial up using a 56K connection. As web designers and site maintainers, we want to ensure our site’s load quickly, as to not lose potential visitors to your site.

Images, Sounds & Animations are the major menaces to download time. While these add nicely to a site, they may take up a lot of time to load. If you may avoid large sized files, please do. Many images may be optimized to look the same, however taking up less space, and download more quickly. Many image editors such as Adobe Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro can perform these tasks.

Sounds & Videos should be avoided on your main page, as they take up most time to load. Keep these for inner pages if possible. Videos and sound files can be from 100 KB to 1 MB in size or larger. If the user needs to load a 500 KB video file on a 56 K modem, it will take upwards to 89 seconds to complete. This definitely could turn the user away from your site. So keep these files to a fairly small size, or avoid if possible.

Text can also play a significant role in the load time. If you have a large amount of HTML code and large amount of content on your main page, it will also increase the load time. Text however is not as significant, as the entire text you have on the site may not be even the same size as a couple of pictures combined.

So limit the large sized graphics on your web sites. Your visitors will appreciate the fast loading site with the information being presented that they are looking for!

How Affordable Websites Can Make You Money

Do you have a website that doesn’t bring you any business?
Are you worried about investing more money in a website that isn’t performing?

Well here is some good news: affordable websites can make you money!

There’s a myth circulating that you have to invest a fortune to make money through the web. Of course the likes of Amazon and eBay have thrown cash at their websites and are reaping the rewards, but I’m not talking about companies of that size. Budget websites can also generate income with the right approach.

The great thing about doing business online is that you can keep your overheads low. No need for expensive shop fronts, offices, printed brochures or a large workforce. Ideal for the small business without endless capital resources.

It is perfectly possible to do business via the web and make a tidy profit using a modest website on a small budget, providing you follow some basic rules regarding content and structure, and concentrate on converting visitors into sales.

I read a fascinating article last week, by Michael L. McGrath of MLM Celtic Enterprises, which successfully articulated some similar ideas that I have been talking to my clients about recently:

“Every web site has a Most Desired Response, that which the the site owner wants the visitor to do while visiting, and that MDR needs to be identified. The site’s design and content need to be crafted tightly and well around the MDR, identify it with absolute clarity, and remove all obstacles that might prevent a visitor from the response.”

That – in a nutshell – is the key to a successful, profitable website, and it need not cost the earth!

It’s amazing how many start-ups fail to grasp this idea, and then complain that their website fails to bring them any business. Imagine that. If you follow a few basic rules, you can produce websites that actually bring you business.

Concentrate on the following:

identifying your Most Desired Response
identifying your target audience
structuring your site and preparing content, based on your MDR and your target audience.

Identify your site’s Most Desired Response

Rather than thinking about how you would like your site to perform, think about how you would like your customers to behave. There’s a subtle but crucial difference.

More often than not, your MDR will be a visitor buying your product or service. By the way, if you want to take online credit/debit card transactions, you can use PayPal, which is quick and easy to set up. All you need is a bank account to get started.

But your Most Desired Response doesn’t have to involve an online transaction. Very often an MDR will be making a phone call, making contact via email, or simply registering personal or business details.

Be sure of your target audience

Successful small businesses identify and corner niche markets, rather than attempt to take on the world! This is doubly important for online marketing, because you will want to avoid competitive keywords when preparing your content for the search engines.

Structure your site and prepare your content

Once you have established your MDR and identified your Target Market, you can begin to structure your site. The structure and content of your site should serve exclusively to trigger the Most Desired Response from your Target Market. Anything which does not fulfill this criterion is superfluous and should be discarded. Be ruthless about this. Avoid building in gimmicks to your

site, which only serve to distract your visitors from the MDR.

I recommend drawing a flow chart which maps your visitors’ journey beginning with the keywords they enter into Google, and tracking their movement through your site to the holy grail – the Most Desired Response.

When preparing your content, you will need to bear two things in mind. Firstly, it has to comply with the MDR. Avoid superfluous waffle, and make sure everything you say is leading your visitor towards that all important conversion. Secondly, you will need to make sure that your content attracts your target audience to the site in the first place – via the search engines. Start by identifying the right keywords – or more accurately keyphrases – and then ensure that they feature in your content.

In the online world, niche markets take on an even more important role, when you come to choose keywords. The big boys will have the generic keywords sewn up already, and those keywords won’t bring you targeted traffic anyway. If you can concentrate on a specialist or localised market so
much the better. You will stand a far better chance of driving targeted traffic to your site and generating hot leads. Of course you need to make sure that your keywords are not so specialised that none of your potential customers are using them. It’s a fine balancing act. Nichebot offers a useful tool for working out the most productive keywords.

So you see, none of this is going to cost you the earth. A great deal of thinking and research (I never said it was easy!), but not a great deal of money. Quite the reverse: if you follow the rules, you will soon be making money.

My Mistakes As A Web Design Newbie

Learn from them

Approaching retirement age I was made redundant last year and decided to create my first web site, initially knowing little about it. I hope that, by reading about my experiences, that I may save you both time and money if you ever find yourself in the position of wanting to build a site with little initial knowledge.

eBooks
I bought five or six ebooks on how to make my web fortune from the one-page web-sites that you see on the web. The prices ranged from $9.95 to $29.95. It would be unfair of me to say that they were of no use, as you can always pick up the odd pointer, or contact. However, with the benefit of hindsight I would not have purchased any of them. Instead there are free, better written books which give you at least the same pointers, and often have more substance. You can download from my web site, for free, two excellent books by Ken Evoy, which will provide you with a good basic knowledge to move forward. Don’t get carried away with the sales hype contained in some of these “get rich quick” single page sales letters that offer huge free bonuses and an imminent price increase.

Universities and colleges
There are various colleges and universities on the web which promise you the ultimate in web creation, site marketing, search engine optimization and much more, “all under one roof” They usually have libraries of “how to” books and membership is by monthly subscription with some offering a lower fee for the first month. Have a look, by all means, I looked at three and claimed my refund within the stated period. I found that I could obtain similar information offered for free with a little searching, and that what they really offered was convenience.

Web Design software
I initially purchased a web site building package for $69.95 and was soon disappointed by its lack of functionality. I then looked over the shoulder of a friend whilst they showed me the workings of a top-end product costing nearly $400.00 but I found it to be too complicated with too steep a learning curve too be quickly productive. I posted a request for help on the Warriors forum and there were more recommends for a particular product than any other. So I decided that my first web site would be a review of that product, which I would create as a trial, before I went on to build a site that would aim at generating income.

What should the web site be about?
Several of the books that I read suggested that the subject matter should be about something that you enjoy doing and therefore you will create your site with more passion and enthusiasm. Whilst this is sound advice I found that the need to create a trial site, which would force me to learn the basics, was more than a sufficient driving force.

Domain name & Web hosting
Go for a dot com registration and pay no more than $10 per annum. Don’t go for free hosting, you get what you pay for. I looked at hosting sites that offered complete package with hosting, autoresponders, SEO and linking software and much more. Whilst everything was conveniently in one place they failed to convince me that each product would stack up well if they were competing in each niche market. I therefore opted for the best of breed approach and a little less convenience.

Search Engine Optimization
This was probably the subject that I was most worried about as I new that it referred to making a web site as easy as possible for the search engines to find, but I had no clue as to how to go about it. I have a free ebook that you can download entitled “Search Engine Optimization Made Easy” which will give you the basics to carry out this process. The book is really a plug by the author of SEO software for his excellent product. I was fortunate in that the web design software I selected also, somewhat unusually, held my hand through this process, carefully pointing out page, by page, what I needed to do.

Article Distribution
I was aware that, in order to succeed, I should submit articles to the numerous Article Directories present on the Internet. There are two ways to do this. By purchasing one of the two major pieces of software to assist me in doing it myself, or to use a company to do it for me. I looked at each way and found that, whilst both software solutions cut out some of the tedious manuals tasks of submitting to over 150 directories, it was still time consuming. Having examined the market place carefully, discounting any company who charged for a fixed number of submissions, I opted for one who for a fixed quarterly fee would submit any number of articles.

Link software
Again, so that I would get more site traffic, I new that I should get other sites to link to mine and that I would have to manage those links and the emails back and forth etc. I initially started to design an Excel spreadsheet linked to Microsoft Word but decided that I would still have to create the links pages by hand. My advice is to obtain software which houses all your links in a searchable database, handles all of the emails, including template housing, and that automatically creates the HTML link pages for you.

Developing A Web Site Concept And Why It Matters.

If your desire is to build a Web site business which attracts targeted traffic and actually works for you, as opposed to a site which languishes in anonymity, then this is the place to start.

Developing a concept is a fundamental step in creating a Web site. It provides a framework, upon which you can identify and mine profitable Keywords, create and add content related to your concept and identify the monetization potential of your site.

So where do you start?

If you already have an established business, your site concept is obvious to you. If not you should look to other interests, experience hobbies or job related activities for inspiration, the possibilities are endless, open your eyes and look around for ideas.

Remember that without traffic, you will not generate income

Your best source of targeted traffic will be from the top 3 search engines, this is the reason why developing a themed, content rich site is so important, but how do you recognize the potential for a specific concept?

Demand

A sufficient amount of people must be searching for your site theme or associated topics. This targeted traffic provides the potential for monetization.

Too broad

If your concept is too broad, although a large number of people may be searching for this theme, the competition will be crippling. It will be impossible to dominate the theme of Sport for example. Even a sub-category such as bowling would require such a massive investment in time and money to render it not economically viable, even if the monetization potential was high.

Too narrow

Likewise a concept which is too narrow will not provide enough demand for you to monetize. A Web site dedicated to The St Petersburg Professional Dwarf Tossing League might be a good example of this. An ideal niche which provides reasonable demand and low supply should be identified by studying Keywords associated with a potential concept.

Keywords

Number, demand and supply… How many keywords are available for your site theme and associated topics. Each page of your site should be built around (focused on) one specific keyword or phrase related to your theme. To find keywords related to your concept, how often they are searched for, and how many sites out there contain those keywords (a formula for profitability), visit Word tracker, they provide one of the best keyword research tools available on the internet.

Are there a good combination of high demand, low supply keywords available and are you starting to get ideas for creating content focused on each of those words?

Subject knowledge

If you choose a concept that you know well and that you are passionate about, it will show in the content you create for your site and it won’t seem like hard work to keep adding to it. There are subtle differences between sites created with passion and excitement for the content therein and sites which are not… your human reader will pick up on them and assign extra credibility to the former, this kind of pre-selling is very powerful when delivered naturally.

Monetization potential

A great site concept will offer good options for monetizing the targeted traffic arriving at your site. Whether your primary monetization plan is to sell hard, soft or drop ship products through an online store, sell a service, use Adsense or promote affiliate programs, you should assess the potential for monetization in the early stages of formulating a site concept. Creating lots of great content and building a well optimized site is a moot point if it offers no potential for monetization.

And finally

At every stage of the Web site building process, try to relax and have fun. Put yourself in the place of your target audience, sitting in front of a keyboard and revving up Google or Yahoo to start a search… what are they looking for? What approach will appeal to them? What is their demographic? The more you know about your target audience the more likely you are to provide a Web site that will attract the kind of targeted traffic you need for success.

Developing A User Friendly Website

One of the most important aspects of a successful business in Denver these days is a good website. And of all the aspects of a website that Denver web development teams address, the perspective of the user is the most important to your success online. If a user has trouble on your site in any number of ways, chances are they will not be back. Why should they bother with a website that does not take their comfort and needs into consideration? And what does that say about the business itself?

The truth is that while you may think of your website as a relatively static representation of your business, the user thinks of your site as an interactive tool. So it is vital that you approach web development, Denver related or otherwise, with the user in mind. The consumer wants to feel like they have made a connection with you rather than just viewing a static page of information.

So how do you accomplish this when planning Denver web development? First of all, take into consideration the different type of user you will attract. Some people may simply want to browse the pages with little or no action on their part. They may not be there to purchase anything, but instead to research an interest. So you need to provide a user friendly atmosphere for these visitors. This comes in the form of high quality content. If these people return time and again to do research on your site, they are more likely to make a purchase in the future.

The other type of use is online to take some sort of action, either by purchasing an item or enlisting a company to provide services. For this visitor, not only do you need to provide a smooth and error-free check out procedure, customizable search feature, and easy site navigation, but you also need to provide them with a way to interact with you.

This interaction goes beyond the standard contact page. The people who are purchasing your goods or services, or even the people who return time and again for your expertise, are your best sources of feedback. You wan their opinions on everything from the quality of goods sold to the preferences of navigation bar styles. They can help you discern new trends and to identify out of date offerings on your site.

For this kind of feedback, you need to bring the user into your website in a very interactive manner. This can be accomplished through message boards, forums, and surveys. You can also compile an email list of visitors to receive regular newsletters that allow for feedback. Other good ways to get customers involved in the site is by holding contests for free items or services.

Above all, always respond to email you get from users. Do not let the time and effort they invested in interaction with your company be in vain. Thank them whether their comments are positive or negative. A negative comment can actually help you more than a positive one can by showing where change is needed.

Finding And Using A Free Web Site Template

If you want to make a web site, but have limited funds or limited design skills, you may want to consider searching out a free web site template. Finding a free web site template is relatively easy. In addition to web design firms, there are also many web hosting companies and domain name registrars that offer this service.

A free website template will provide the bare skeleton design. When you are ready to make a web site, you simply fill in the empty spaces with your own text. In certain cases, your free web site template will come complete with images, and in other cases, you will only have frames and backgrounds to build upon.

The free web site template that you decide to go with should be visually pleasing and have all of the features you will need to make a web site. Above all, it should look professional. Web visitors will judge your products and services on the look of your web site. Choose the wrong free web site template and you may send your traffic away in droves before they have a chance to get to know you.

More Tips for Choosing a Free Web Site Template
While it is nice to get something for free, you should never completely base your web site design decisions on price alone. When choosing a free web site template, it is essential that it contains all of the essential aspects needed to make a web site and manage it as your business grows. Particular things to focus on when finding a free web site template include:

Support – Choosing a company or web developer that can offer you ongoing support with your free web site template is important. If you have problems when you make a web site or try to make changes, you need to know that you have someone you can call on for help.

Credibility – The last thing you want to do is choose some fly-by-night company that has no experience or no track record of success. You will be much better off choosing a free web site template from a credible company that is sure to still be in business in the coming years.

Security – If you will be using a free web site template from your web host, you need to make sure that it comes equipped with the security features you need. Custom applications need to be accessible to the right people and the database must be capable of storing sensitive information.

Individuality – The one bad thing about a free web site template is the fact that other web sites may be using the same template as you. If you want to make a web site that is completely original, a free web site template may not be for you. If you will be getting the template from a designer or a service like your web host or domain name registrar, you may want to ask how many other sites are using a similar template.

Implementing The Perfect Font In Your Design

Some of the greatest graphic designers implement the perfect fonts within their designs. A simple font can make all the difference. Whether you’re familiar with graphic design or not, fonts are one of the most important aspects when it comes to design.

Typography is how fonts are created. A typographer will construct a series of letters using a font they have conjured. This can be done by hand, as it traditionally was, or can be done with computers – which is more popular.

Font such as Arial are beautiful and standard for just about any simple font needed. Times New Roman is more for newspaper or magazine print, but is also quite standard.

Rounded fonts are great for more feminine or youth oriented designs. Many designers also implement fonts into their designs by using text characters as objects rather than using pictures. For example, using a period instead of creating a small circle is generally quicker for the designer and will be more uniform than something they made by using a circle tool.

Fonts are typically one of the most frustrating things for designers, but are definitely one of the most important. You’ll need to enhance your designs with top quality fonts or else your images and backgrounds will look out of place with boring old text and a font you see everywhere.

Original fonts, such as buffet script font by Alejandro Paul are very unique and artsy. In fact, it only became available digitally very recently. It’s no wonder, since if you are familiar with this font at all, you know how the letter intertwine with each other. They curve around, and some letters are extremely scripty. This of course makes it very difficult to digitalize.

This font, buffet script font, also contains discretionary ligatures which gives the designer tons more options of ways to use the font. With such a wide variety of alternative forms of calligraphy, it’s no wonder why this font is increasingly popular. Buffet Script was also one of the world-renowned Letras Latinas 2006 selected fonts, and since then has gained much popularity.

Long gone are the days that Brush script or French script fonts ruled as the most elegant and lush calligraphy type fonts that graced sophisticated and fancy restaurant menus or ballet recital programs.

In recent decades, more and more beautiful fonts are becoming readily available, but usually at quite high of a price. Buffet script font is listed at about a hefty $99.00. If you’re not used to paying for fonts because you’ve always downloaded them for free, this can come as quite a shock.

Sites like Sudtipos.com or Veer.com are great examples of site that contain just about every font a designer could wish for. The better ones often come at a ridiculously high price, but for the amount of designs that could be conjured from those particular fonts, the price may just be worth every penny.

Find timely information in the topic of web traffic – welcome to your personal guide.

Tips To Design A Successful Website

All people that start a website would like for it to be successful, and by that I mean that it actually makes money online. If this is your desire there are many things you must do for your website to be a success.

You need to have a fast loading website that loads in under 8 seconds, nobody likes to wait for pages to load. You want to optimize your website for the search engines by using the right kind of Meta Tags and content description. About all of the web traffic comes from the main search engines and there are about 6 or so of them. By submitting to these search engines monthly you will stay up to date on them.

All the backgrounds should be simple and friendly to readers, do not put things there to draw attention away from the article. Keep your backgrounds the same throughout the site, make it clean and no wild colors. When you are deciding what color the website will be, pick colors that kind of match the topic. Animated graphics are distracting so use graphics sparingly, too many graphics can make a website look unprofessional plus they slow the load time down.

A home page should tell you what the website will be about, like if it is about steps to make money online, you should stay on that topic. If it is difficult to understand what the site is about then making money will be unlikely.

You should not have to many banner ads, limit banners to maybe 2 or 3 and it is best not to put them on the top of web page. Use the right grammar and spelling this keeps it looking professional. Always make sure the links are working properly, you do not need errors popping up on users. Put the contact information easy to see on each page and respond to comments quickly if you have that option on the website.

Navigating the website should be easy, so place navigation links together at the top of page and at the bottom or sides. If you have a bunch of links be sure to use text links, because images take longer to load. If you use backlinks for seo or swap website links with other website owners for search engine rankings it will be best to have a page just for these links. Any site that is successful or makes money online will have these kind of pages to build their link popularity.

The website logo should be placed on each page and have navigational links on every page of the website. If you plan to use sound on the website, fix it were the visitors have to click on a object or link before the sound starts.
